What is MBTI?

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality measuring tool that is very popular and widely used for various purposes. MBTI was developed by a mother and daughter from the United States named Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers based on the personality theory developed by Carl Gustav Jung. MBTI measures and classifies a person's personality based on 4 dimensions.

Dimensions in measuring the MBTI

Extraversion (E) and Introversion (I) are dimensions that measure how open a person is to the public and how comfortable that person is when he is with other people. If he is available and comfortable when he is with other people, then he is an extrovert. On the other hand, if he is closed and more comfortable being alone, then he is an introvert

Sensing (S) and Intuiting (N) measure how a person receives information. If he prefers to focus on data, specific and definite then he is sensing. If he prefers to focus on imagination, inspiration and abstract thinking, then he is intuitive.

Thinking (T) and Feeling (F) are dimensions that assess how a person makes decisions and conclusions. If he tends to use logic and analysis in making decisions, then he is Thinking. If he tends to use feelings and empathy in making decisions, then he is feeling

Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P) is a dimension that measures a person's lifestyle. If his lifestyle is structured and systematic, then he is judging. If his lifestyle is abstract and flexible, then he is perceiving.

By combining preferences in these four dimensions, the MBTI divides humans into 16 types of groups. Each type has unique characteristics that describe how the individual interacts with others, makes decisions, and works.

Can the MBTI be used as a personality measurement tool?

Even though the MBTI is very popular and widely used, it is not an ideal personality measurement tool. This is because there are many things that could be improved in the assessment method and the output of the assessment.

The MBTI classifies individuals into one of two categories within each dimension. In reality, the human personality is on a more complex spectrum.

MBTI assumes a person's personality type is something that remains constant throughout a person's life. In reality, human personality is something that can change over time. This change is influenced by the environment, experience, needs and much more.

The MBTI does not consider the social, cultural, or situational context of a person's personality. For example, a person may be an introvert in one group and an extrovert in another, but the MBTI does not accommodate these changes.
