What are the Dangers of Plastic for the Environment?

Plastic is a synthetic material or polymer that can be formed into various shapes and used for various purposes. Plastics are formed through a chemical process called polymerization, in which basic molecules combine to form long chains or networks. Some types of plastic that are often used are polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and many more.

The use of plastic in industry and daily needs is for packaging, construction, automotive, electronics, and many more. Plastic widely used is because it is durable, easy to recycle, light, does not conduct electricity, and many other reasons.

Although plastic can be used in many ways, the use of plastic harms the environment. Some of the bad impacts of plastic on the environment is: 

1. Marine pollution and water ecosystems

Plastic often ends up in waters, both rivers and seas, causing water pollution. This can harm marine ecosystems and threaten the sustainability of marine life. Plastic can also absorb chemical pollutants that can harm aquatic organisms.

2. Soil and habitat damage

Plastic that does not decompose when thrown away carelessly can accumulate in the soil and damage the quality of the soil. Disposal of plastic waste can also damage natural habitats and ecosystems.

3. Exacerbating the greenhouse effect and climate change

Plastic production, distribution and disposal processes can produce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. Additionally, plastic decomposing in landfills can produce methane, a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide.
