Differences Between Forests, Plantations, and Agroforestry in Carbon Sequestration

Carbon sequestration is a critical issue in addressing climate change. Vegetation acts as a carbon dioxide (CO₂) absorber through photosynthesis, then stores it in biomass and soil. However, not all land-use systems have the same ability to absorb and store carbon. Forests, plantations, and agroforestry show significant differences.

Forests

Forests have the highest carbon sequestration capacity. This is due to the diversity of vegetation and its layered structure, which allows for the sequestration of large amounts of carbon, both in plants and in the soil. Furthermore, forests have stable ecosystem cycles, allowing carbon to be stored long-term. Forest soil is also rich in organic matter, which serves as a carbon reservoir.

Monoculture Plantations

Monoculture plantations such as oil palm or rubber have the capacity to sequester carbon, but at a lower rate than forests. This is due to the limited plant diversity and simpler vegetation structure. Furthermore, the harvest cycle and land clearing can reduce carbon storage capacity. In many cases, plantations replace forests, resulting in significant carbon storage losses.

Agroforestry

Agroforestry sits between forests and plantations. This system combines forestry crops with crops, resulting in a more complex vegetation structure than plantations, but less dense than forests. Its carbon sequestration capacity is higher than that of monocultures due to the presence of trees and plant diversity, as well as its contribution to improving soil quality. Agroforestry also allows for continued economic production without completely sacrificing ecological functions.

In general, forests remain the most effective carbon sink, followed by agroforestry, and then monoculture plantations. However, in the context of economic needs and sustainability, agroforestry is often considered the best compromise between productivity and environmental functions.
