Challenges in Applying NFTs to Real-World Assets

One of the functions of blockchain is as a sign of ownership of an asset, including unique assets whose ownership can be shown with an NFT (Non-Fungible Token). The concept of tokenizing physical assets is promising, but many challenges must be resolved before NFTs can become the standard in real-world transactions. Here are some of the main challenges in applying NFTs to physical assets.

1. Unclear Regulations

One of the biggest obstacles to NFT adoption for real-world assets is the lack of clear regulation. Each country has different legal rules regarding asset ownership and transactions on the blockchain. This uncertainty makes investors and businesspeople hesitate to use NFTs as legal proof of ownership. Without a clear legal framework, NFT adoption in the sector will be slow.

2. Connectivity between Blockchain and the Real World

NFTs work well in the digital world because ownership can be verified directly on the blockchain. However, when it comes to physical assets, the big question arises “How to ensure that an NFT truly represents ownership of the physical asset?”. For example, if someone owns an NFT representing a house, how can one ensure that the house is not resold outside the blockchain? Without rules that firmly connect the digital and physical worlds, there is a risk that NFTs become simply digital certificates without legal force.

3. Security

Security challenges in applying NFTs to real-world assets include the risks of fraud, theft, and ownership verification. One of them is asset forgery, where someone can mint NFTs for property or items that they do not own. Additionally, there is a risk of double selling, where a physical asset is sold conventionally outside the blockchain while its NFT remains in circulation, creating an ownership conflict. Cyberattacks and NFT theft are also a threat because if someone loses access to their digital wallet, ownership of digital assets could be lost without a way to recover.

4. Rapid Technological Change

The world of blockchain is evolving very quickly, and NFT standards could change in the next few years. This makes people unsure that current NFT technology will still be compatible with NFTs in the future. Without clear global standards, NFTs for real-world assets could face compatibility issues and lose value in the long term.

Although NFTs have great potential to revolutionize the ownership and transactions of physical assets, many challenges exist to overcome. Regulatory issues, digital-physical world connectivity, and security are still the main obstacles. However, with technological developments and wider adoption, it is possible that in the future NFTs can be used as legal and secure proof of ownership of real-world assets.
